Would you mind telling us more about your minor eating disorder? (Sorry if it’s a sensitive topic.) I’ve been struggling with anorexia for three years and would love to hear about your recovery. I don’t know what I should do to get better; I’m scared to eat.

It’s fine, I don’t mind at all. I had a period of time where I just hated food, and I hated ingesting anything, the thought of and feel swallowing was horrible, almost as if my throat was tightening whenever I swallowed something. My weight dwindled to around 39kg.

I was on congee (rice porridge/rice gruel) diet a lot of the time and dependant highly on a liquid foods. In the beginning I tried to add different things into the congee to try and improve my diet, but in the end they would end up being picked out.

I didn’t really have a moment in which I just decided ‘this was enough!’ unlike a lot of people, but I just started to eat things that I liked, disregarding how unhealthy they were or how bad they were for your body (marshmallows, chocolate, ice cream- anything!). It was ice cream accompanying a sad movie every night for me (the movie or show will take your mind off the eating). Not a lot of people would recommend you doing this I imagine, as my diet was still nowhere near balanced and this isn’t good for your health either.

It really comes down to starting with the things you like about food. Instead of viewing food as something that sustains our health, view it simply as a source of pleasure. After getting my appetite back slowly I started to try and balance out the nutrients I needed from different foods.

l hope this can help you, I’m not qualified in anyway, but for me this really made a difference. All the best to you – I wish you a swift recovery ❤

Thank you for replying! I’ve been trying to break free from my disorder for months without much success, but I’ll try to regain my health gradually like you suggested! I’m actually a little less than 39kg myself, and even though I know that it’s not healthy at all, it’s so hard to stop restricting because I don’t even know what healthy portions are anymore. Anyways, thanks for the advice — I’m going to try my best!!

Don’t think about proportions- just the fact that you’re getting some food in your system =] Here’s a fitting “+oil” dear (‘add oil’ in Cantonese is an expression of encouragement ^^)! You can do this!

I actually cut my hair by myself most of the time and I only visit the hair stylist two times a year (when I go back to Hong Kong) because the hair stylists in England don’t really know how I want my hair as they aren’t as familiar with Asian trends.

I have a lot of practice with cutting wigs so I simply went in with my scissors right away – but if you want to go to the hair stylist, I think you should tell them you want bangs that only cover the centre of your forehead (curving into longer edges to frame the face). Showing them a photo of what you want would definitely be the best bet though =]
