Bourjois Rouge Edition Souffle de Velvet is the new sister product to the Bourjois Rouge Edition Velvet Liquid Lipsticks, it’s supposed to be a ‘sheer veil of matte colour’ in contrast to the ‘intense 24hour hold’ colour that is its predecessor.
With a sheer, transparent finish that reminds me of the Canmake Whip Mousse Lips that have since been discontinued, I am very happy to report that these are one of the most comfortable to wear matte product releases from the drugstore!
They have a lightly emollient finish that slides around a bit and makes them not very long lasting, but the sheer-ness of the product also makes it easy to re-apply and the shades are quite universally flattering.
Though they apply as a gloss first, when you smooth it out over your lips they then settle into a matte finish. These do not layer well – you won’t be able to get them to build up coverage without smear-marks; however, this isn’t how the product is intended to be used – so it’s understandable.
The main problem with this product is actually the shade selection. As you can see from the swatches (I’ve swatched the 6 colours I managed to find), there’s basically only two shades. I’ve swatched: 02 Coquelie’oh!, 03 VIPeach, 04 Ravie En Rose, 05 Fuchsiamallow, 06 Cherry Leaders, 07 Plum Plum Pidou; and I believe I’m missing the lightest (01) and darkest (08) shades.
02 Coquelie’oh! is just a tad bit cooler and redder than 03 VIPeach.
03 VIPeach is more orange and darker than 04 Ravie En Rose.
04 Ravie En Rose is cooler and pinker than 03 VIPeach, and the sheerest of all the shades.
05 Fuchsiamallow, 06 Cherry Leaders and 07 Plum Plum Pidou are basically the sames shades with an alternating amount of the pink/red ratio in them and different opacities – with the higher numbers being more pigmented.
Overall, you only really need two shades of this whole line to complete the range of colours when applied to your lips and my recommendation would be to pick up two of the lighter shades and either 05 or 07 out of the darker ones according to your preference as 06 is slightly patchier than the other two.
